ITS--SAN ANTONIO MOVES OUT

An intelligent transportation system (ITS) in San Antonio, known as Trans Guide, promises to improve air quality, enhance safety, and reduce congestion and fuel consumption. This article describes San Antonio's increasingly cramped driving conditions and the 5 years of conceptual and construction work that resulted in the Trans Guide system. This advanced traffic management system (ATMS) uses sensors, alarms, video cameras, computers, and a control center to keep traffic moving. Transportation officials nationwide are monitoring the progress of this "smart highway" so that if the results are positive, similar traffic management technologies can be deployed in other states.
