ITS - MORE THAN SMARTCARS

Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) is the successor to Intelligent Vehicle Highway Systems (IVHS). ITS is already operating in three continents and probably is the most cooperative industry-U.S. Government program in automobile history. The U.S. Congress launched ITS in 1991 with a gigantic $659 million grant that will encompass a trio of major research projects: INTELLIGENT CRUISE CONTROL to steer clear of road obstacles, and other vehicles; NAVIGATION GUIDANCE, a visual and/or audio system to cut driving time, accidents, direct a driver to a destination; and AUTOMATED HIGHWAYS which is probably the most controversial area but maybe the oldest concept of this group. Involved are the U.S. Big Three of GM, Ford, Chrysler and a host of suppliers. Virtually all of the European and Japanese automobile manufacturers are involved.
