IMPROVEMENT OF SHIP DESIGN BY ELABORATION OF PROBLEMS' PRIORITY

The paper describes a controlled optimisation procedure for determining the priority of variables at the three main stages of the design process, <1> Design request; <2> Preliminary design; <3> Ship design. The main variables for the design request, i.e. deadweight, number and speed of ships under fixed yearly transport capacity and fixed steaming range, type of cargo and ship's type are combined to produce a ship's merit factor which is considered to provide the best technical and economic solution to the design request.
