COMPARISON OF CARGO CAPACITIES BETWEEN RO-RO-SHIPS AND LO-LO- CONTAINERSHIPS IN AN IDENTICAL HULL-FORM-CONFIGURATION

The Author <of TransConsultants, Gothenburg> has investigated the cargo capacities of Ro/Ro ships and Lo/Lo containerships and has compared two ships, one of each of these types, having the same main hull-dimensions <length o.a. 250m, breadth 32.26m, depth 20m> & hull form; their trials speed is 19.5 knots. The ships' cargo capacities are tabulated to show that the total TEU capacity <on deck and below> of each ship-type is about the same; however, if the underdeck spaces of the Ro/Ro ship are used for unitised cargo, then the Ro/Ro has 35% more space and can carry 18.6% more general cargo of normal density. One reason for the Ro/Ro's better figures is that its design allows an extra tier of containers <4 instead of 3> to be carried on the weatherdeck, while retaining the same height above the waterline and a similar stability condition. This and other reasons in favour of the Ro/Ro ship are discussed, and among the aspects considered are earning capacity, turnround time, and use of lift-on/lift-off for weatherdeck containers on the Ro/Ro. It is mentioned that the all- important factor in the present comparison is the Ro/Ro's higher earning capacity, which easily compensates for its greater initial cost.
