CALCULATION OF LIQUID MOTIONS IN PARTIALLY FILLED TANKS AND FLOODED COMPARTMENTS

The aim of this study is the calculation of the forces which the liquid moving in a tank or flooded compartment exerts on the ship thereby affecting its motions. for simulating ship motions in a seaway, shallow-water equations are used to calculate the liquid motions in tanks with a free surface. As hydraulic jumps render conventional methods differences unsuitable, the Glimm <random choice> method is used. Results are compared with experimental values, analytical solutions, and results from conventional methods of differences. The paper is arranged under the headings:-- 1: Introduction. 2. Extent of Validity of Shallow-Water Equations. 3. Liquid Motion in a Rectangular Prismatic Tank, with Excitation only through the Ship's Rolling Motion <Equations of Motion -- The Glimm Method - Numerical Results>. 4. Liquid Motion in a Rectangular Prismatic Tank, with Excitation by the Ship's Motion with 6 Degrees of Freedom <Equations of Motion -- Extension of the (Glimm) Calculation Method -- Numerical Results>. 5. Other Boundary Conditions. 6. Calculation Time.
