NATURAL CONVECTION HEAT TRANSFER IN TANK-HEATING OF HIGH-VISCOUS OILS INCLUDING A LOW-GRADE FUEL AND A COAL-OIL MIXTURE <COM

Theoretical and experimental studies of natural convection heat transfer have been carried out on high viscosity fluids, including a coal-oil mixture <COM>, a low-grade heavy fuel oil and a heavy crude oil with the aim of clarifying the tank heating problems of these fluids aboard ship. For the purposes of the investigation, a single horizontal tube heater is assumed. Model tests and theoretical calculations were performed to determine both the heat transfer coefficients and the temperature distributions in a cargo oil tank. The results are used to develop design guidelines for improved tank heaters capable of dealing with the special problems of future fuels.
