SAIL ASSIST RETROFIT OF THE TRAINING SHIP GOLDEN BEAR. VOL. 1

This report is in microfiche form. A study has been made of the feasibility of fitting a CAT rig comprising triangular fabric sails <Bermuda type> supported by a rotatable mast <for furling> and a boom, rigid wing sails, and a Magnus effect rotor to the Golden Bear, a former cargo ship of 10,000 tons displacement operated by the California Maritime Academy. It is proposed that all three rigs should be fitted to the ship for research and instructional purposes. The dimensions of the various components are derived, and costs are estimated. Studies of the return on investment likely to be achieved are also included. See also next Abstract.
