CALCULATING DEADWEIGHT FROM DRAUGHT
A mathematical model for the relationship between a vessel's deadweight and draught can be a convenient substitute for cumbersome displacement scales, or a means of checking the accuracy with which they have been read. The displacement scale of a vessel of full hull form, especially over its top half, can be approximated by a quadratic equation. Three methods of deriving this equation are described, and are illustrated in an example.
