COMPUTER-AIDED DESIGN AND DRAFTING IN THE CANADIAN MARINE CONSULTING FIELD

The first installation of a computer-aided design and drafting system by Canadian consultant naval architects is believed to be that by Robert Allan Ltd., which is described. All design calculations are performed on a pair of Hewlett-Packard desk-top computers, and the computer-aided drafting system also employs Hewlett-Packard equipment, and is based on the CEADS-CADD software package. The training of the staff on the system and its operation are briefly described. It is considered that computer-generated drawings offer an overall improvement in productivity and product; result in all drawings being produced to a uniform and consistent standard; and greatly improve the accuracy of the drawings, which are stored in final form. In addition there is much improved capacity for fast response to proposals; improved quality control; better archiving and security; rapid and simple alteration of drawings, with all changes automatically transposed to all other drawings containing the same detail; increased participation by staff in the design process combined with the elimination of routine drafting. Shipyards will benefit from receiving a much higher standard of drawings, which are easier to change and update, while the use of standardised details <stored on modules in the system> improves yard productivity, and it is possible to generate tapes for NC burning machines directly from the CADD system.
