ROLLER WORM GEAR. A NOVEL POWER TRANSMISSION DEVICE WITH CONSTANT SPEED REDUCTION RATIO
In the reduction gear described the worm has a square thread which engages with cylindrical rollers mounted on the teeth or spokes of the worm wheel. This results in a considerably higher efficiency than the conventional worm gear where there is sliding contact between the worm and the wormwheel teeth; wear is also less with the new design. In addition, while the gear set itself might prove slightly more costly than a conventional unit, the reduced friction in the new design enables the cooling system to be greatly simplified, while in addition in many cases a smaller motor would suffice for a particular duty.
