IVHS: THE MARRIAGE OF TRANSPORTATION AND COMMUNICATIONS
IVHS represents an effective, intermediate solution to the problem of increasing travel demand under conventional mobility conditions where infrastructure development (capacity) is limited, but system demand and public access remain largely uncontrolled. In a multi-modal but capacity-limited surface transportation system, the realistic hope is that IVHS will be able to better distribute the demand across available resources. The same technologies that will enable IVHS to more efficiently manage existing resources will, at the same time, exert significant effects upon the nature of the workplace itself, leading to a highly distributed, globally networked population of workers whose products will become increasingly, information-intensive.
