PROSPECTS FOR TRAFFIC CONTROL SYSTEMS

This article describes the various options which can be undertaken to optimise traffic flow according to various criteria using intelligent communication systems. A distinction is made between collective and individual systems. The system architecture of a typical collective control and management system, and the information which can be obtained from it are described. For an individual system communication between roadside and vehicle is required in addition to the collective system. The aquisition of road condition and meterological data and the use of communications systems in road pricing are discussed. Some of the systems in use are outlined. Otherapplications for communications systems are noted. For the covering abstract see IRRD 866027.
