A STUDY OF MICROWAVE TELEVISION FOR TRAFFIC SURVEILLANCE IN TEXAS

The study is concerned with the design and evaluation of a closed circuit television system which uses a microwave transmission system for the video signals. A one-camera system was designed and installed at an urban intersection to monitor the operation of traffic and traffic control devices. The system has operated well for three years with only infrequent disruptions of service which were due primarily to lightning damage. Initial costs for the transmission system were high when compared to direct cable systems, but considerations for lower maintenance cost, flexibility of design for relocation and low costs for long range transmission (up to 10 miles (6.2 kilometers) make the microwave system of transmission very competitive with other designs.
