GEOTEXTILE STRIPS FOR PAVEMENT REPAIRS. LOGAN INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT, BOSTON, USA

This short article describes the use of geotextile strips for repairing Logan International Airport. Settlement in the weak foundation soils underlying the airport had caused cracking. A pavement geotextile interlayer product called Petrotac was used to cover each crack in the old pavement prior to overlay placement. Petrotac consists of a nonwoven polypropylene geotextile. This is coated on one side with a rubberized asphalt modified with additives to make it stick to the old pavement. It is coated on the other side with a paving grade asphalt tack coat. It provides waterproofing and stress absorption. Brief details of the construction method are provided, as are the effects of such treatment upon the development of reflective cracks. For the covering abstract see IRRD 865821.
