WEIGHING OF VEHICLES IN MOTION USING FIBER OPTIC SENSORS

New techniques are both replacing and complementing the current technologies used for the various methods of weighing vehicles in motion, as well as monitoring traffic flow. With a view to investigating the feasibility of using fiber optic sensors to detect and weigh a vehicle in motion, Alcatel was consulted by the French authority Laboratoire Central des Ponts et Chaussees (central laboratory for bridges and roadways). Following successful initial experiments, real tests were carried out using 55 cm-long sensing elements attached to the road surface. This article explains the principle of the sensing system and describes its evolution from the research stage towards the final product.
