STRUCTURAL ANALYSIS OF COMPOSITE BRIDGES UNDER THERMAL AND MECHANICAL LOADS

Design engineers evaluate accurately dead and live load acting on the superstructure of bridges. However, in the case of thermal loads, the designer of bridges bases the evaluation of such loads on his experience and on recommendations of existing codes of practice, which usually consider temperature effects in a trivial manner. The present paper is focussed on the behaviour of composite bridges under temperature effects. Results related to the thermal response and stress distributions in composite bridges are presented. In addition, an assessment of the temperature distribution to be considered in the design of composite bridges is carried out. Lastly, the influence of the thermal stresses on the behaviour of composite bridge decks in serviceability conditions is analysed. (A) For the covering abstract see IRRD 864118.
