EXPERIENCE WITH AUTOMATIC DE-ICING SPRINKLER INSTALLATIONS
Automatic de-icing sprinkler installations are integral parts of stationary winter road maintenance equipment. They are designed to decrease the danger on sections of road considered problematic by winter road maintenance departments and to provide road users with uniform driving conditions on the roadways. They cannot replace the snow fighting vehicles in the event of snowfall, but they can make the job considerably easier. Their profitability should be determined by running a cost-benefit analysis which takes account of accident statistics as well as the costs of traffic congestion to the economy as a whole. These systems have been perfected and have been shown to operate with a high degree of reliability.
