THE SHALLOW-DRAFT NUCLEAR-POWERED ICEBREAKER TAYMYR

A Soviet shallow-draft, turboelectric nuclear-powered icebreaker, the TAYMYR, is described. The vessel's extreme length, without the stern crinoline, is 150.0m. Speed in clear water is 18.5 knots. The crew complement is 110. The vessel has continuous shaft power of 32.5 MW, a three-shaft propulsion system, and stern propellers. It is intended to escort ships in the Arctic and in freezing non-arctic seas, tow them in ice and in clear water, and assist ships if they suffer ice damage.
