OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH AND SAFETY OF MARINE PILOTS

This article reprints a report prepared for the United Kingdom Pilots Association (Marine) reviewing studies and relevant reports, regulations and papers having to do with human factors in relation to ship pilotage. The contents cover: health hazards; safety hazards; hazard reduction; the duties of the employer and of the employee under the UK's Health and Safety at Work Act of 1974; duties of a self-employed person; the duty to provide, and to receive, training; a summary of main recommendations. In an appendix, draft regulations concerning work and rest time regulations for marine pilots are presented.
