AN ANATOMY OF PORT DESIGN AND IMPLEMENTATION: MODEL STUDIES

This article is the fourth in the series "An Anatomy of Port Design & Implementation." Its particular focus is on model studies, which are a relatively recent innovation as an essential contributory element in the design of new port construction or the improvement of existing facilities. Numerical and physical hydraulic model studies can provide design criteria definition, solution strategy and technical advice with regard to the many aspects of port and harbor projects. Although they may seem expensive, they are extremely helpful in evolving the most cost-effective solution to the engineering problems presented by such projects. The various types of model studies available are reviewed.
