ICE RESISTANCE IN LEVEL ICE OF SHIPS WITH MAIN DIMENSIONS TYPICAL FOR THE GREAT LAKES BULK CARRIERS

This supplement comprises a re-analysis of the ship model resistance tests in level ice that were presented in a previous WIMB (Wartsila Icebreaking Model Basin) report. Certain defects in the method for calculating the ice resistance for Great Lakes bulk carriers that was described in the previous report are pointed out. The supplement suggests alternative calculation methods, and presents the final formula for resistance calculation as well as tables of resistance values. One of the main objectives of the revision was to extend the validity of the results to cover ship lengths of up to 1000 ft. instead of 715 ft., which was the upper limit in the previous method.
