TANKERS IN THE 1990'S: LEGACIES OF THE 80'S AND OPPORTUNITIES OF THE 90'S

The historical background to the problems that confronted the tanker industry in the 1980s is reviewed and an optimistic outlook is presented for the 1990s. The major difficulty during the 80s is identified as having been the oversupply of tankers. Rationalization and increasing requirements for long haul crudes are improving the economic environment for the industry. The author suggests that the major question of the 1990s is not whether the industry will make money --for it will--but rather that of who will make the money. Eleven figures charting tanker supply and demand, laid up tonnage, newbuilding activity, tanker prices, crude oil production, etc., accompany the test.
