EXPERIENCE WITH THE FRENCH PETROLEUM INSTITUTE PROPANE CLARIFICATION PROCESS IN RE-REFINING SPENT CRANKCASE OILS
A process is described for propane clarification of spent lubricating oils prior to conventional acid/clay treating. The process lowers the amounts of acid and clay needed, reduces sludge formation and associated pollution, and improves product quality. Yields are much higher than for conventional acid/clay treatment alone. Tables are presented for comparison of the properties of lubricating oil from virgin stock and four grades of re-refined oil produced by the process described. From these data it is noted that the color, acid number, and Conradson carbon are better for the propane-clarified oils. This has permitted marketing of the re-refined oils on a competitive basis with lubricants prepared from virgin stock. In studying the economics of the process it is found that plant investment and operating costs are low, with the erected cost of a complete plant being approximately 1,400,000 dollars (French basis, October 1972). A 12.5 percent increase over the average market prince for re-refined oils has been realized with utilization of the new process.
