DEVELOPMENT OF A NEW-TYPE HYDROFOIL CATAMARAN, 1ST REPORT: CONFIGURATION DESIGN AND RESISTANCE PROPERTIES

A new type of hydrofoil catamaran was designed and its resistance properties were clarified by experiments. The new design has two knifelike hulls and two rectangular hydrofoils with high aspect ratio. At the design speed (40 kt for 200 tons), 80 to 90 percent of the weight is supported by the hydrofoils and the total resistance coefficient is much smaller than for conventional high-speed craft. The sharp hulls make for a very smooth transition to the mostly- foil-borne condition.
