NEW STARS FOR NAVIGATION
Satellite navigation schemes are well set to replace their terrestrial predecessors. The Navstar Global Positioning System (GPS) developed by the U.S. Department of Defense seems the certain successor, but the author explains why Navstar is not enough. A complementary nonmilitary system seems necessary and he discusses what possibilities exist. One trend discussed is that toward integrated receivers. Manufacturers are already selling GPS receivers combined with those of terrestrial systems like Loran and Decca and the concept of a GPS/Inmarsat receiver combining the functions of satellite communication and navigation is being explored.
