SAFETY OF THE RO-RO SHIP: THE ROLE OF THE CLASSIFICATION SOCIETIES
This article questions whether the minimum SOLAS (Safety of Life at Sea) standard for the subdivision and stability of passenger vessels is adequate for roll-on, roll-off ferries of the type exemplified by the EUROPEAN GATEWAY and the HERALD OF FREE ENTERPRISE, two casualties of the 80s. It also questions whether operational procedures on this type of vessel are sufficiently strict.
