THE VISCOELASTIC BEHAVIOUR OF DISTILLATION BITUMEN

The object of this study is to investigate the stress- deformation behaviour of distillation bitumen in the transition from the solid to the liquid phase and to describe it mathematically. The mathematical solution is based on the second fundamental law of rheology which defines the relation between change of form and stress and its deviations in time. Because of the adaptability of the creep function the stress deformation ratio of the general Kelvin body with superimposed viscous flow is suggested for describing the behaviour of distillation bitumen. For experimental work a rotation viscometer is used which was modified as regards the load device and supplemented by a tempering device. By using the rotation viscometer it is coordinates from the angular deformation of the volume elements subjected to shearing. The differential equation for the change of shear stress in a radial direction is applied to the shearing of a viscoelastic body between concentric cylinders. By very careful measurements at varying loads and temperatures test results were obtained which confirm quantitatively and qualitatively the correctness of the theoretical considerations. In conclusion the report shows that the stress deformation behaviour of distillation bitumen can be defined with sufficient accuracy quantitatively by the 4 parameter model chosen. /TRRL/
