HORIZONTALLY CURVED CONTINUOUS POST-TENSIONED CONCRETE BEAMS
Torsional effects are highly significant in beams which are curved in plane, even when the applied loading is symmetrical about the centerline of the beam. In a sharply curved beam, the induced torsional moments may in fact control the cross-sectional dimensions or the shear reinforcement in the beam. Two methods are presented whereby torsional moments in curved, continuous, post- tensioned concrete beams may be controlled. The first method entails a redistribution of induced torsional moments by the use of torque-free, eccentric, internal supports. The second method relates to the introduction of radial eccentricity in the profile of the prestressing cables. In both methods the eccentricity is considered with respect to the centerline of the beam. The overall effect is to "balance out" a predetermined portion of the torsional moments induced by the permanent service loading.
