DEVELOPMENT OF THE CATERPILLAR 3600 SERIES ENGINES

The 3600 Series are medium speed, heavy duty, four stroke per cycle diesel engines designed for marine, industrial and electric power generation with applications in drill rigs, pumps, dredges and locomotives. They encompass a power range from 1500 kW to 4500 kW (2000 hp to 6000 hp) and have a bore of 280 mm and a stroke of 300 mm in cylinder arrangements of inline 6, inline 8, vee 12 and vee 16. Individual cylinder displacement is 18.5 liters. The initial power ratings are 280 kW/cyl at 1000 rpm and 260 kW/cyl at 900 rpm. Ratings of 223 kW/cyl at 750 rpm and 215 kW/cyl at 720 rpm are also planned. The 3600 Series Engines are an extension of the Caterpillar engine offering above the current 3500 Engine ratings of 1500 kW into markets not currently served by the Company. This paper describes the development of the 3600 Series Engines through the design, development and initial testing phases.
