DETERMINATION OF THE RESISTANCE OF FAST ROUND BOTTOM BOATS WITH CHINE IN THE ZONE OF THE AFTERBODY

The power performance of high speed, semi-displacement round bilge hulls can be improved by replacing the round bilge, before the transom, with a hard-chine. To investigate the influence of that position of the hard-chine on resistance, wetted surface and running trim, three models, conforming to the NPL-High Speed Round Bilge Displacement Hull form, but with different length-to-beam ratios, were tested. By applying the hard-chine, the resistance of all three models decreased. A significantly greater reduction in resistance was obtained by additionally applying two overlapping spray rails and a transom wedge. On the basis of the test results, a simple procedure for correcting the residuary resistance, the wetted surface and the running trim of the NPL Hull Series was developed.
