MODERN PASSENGER SHIP CONSTRUCTION

The main aim of this paper is to draw attention to changes in the shipbuilding industry and the progress in the adoption of new technology, with particular reference to the construction of large passenger ships. To illustrate this theme, three specific ships are considered--one from the early thirties, one from the mid-fifties, and one under construction in 1986, the cruise ferry NORSEA. It is not the object of this paper to deal with the role of passenger liners/cruise ferries, nor with the effect of this changing role on their design; however, limited reference to these factors is appropriate to the appreciation of design features and their bearing on construction.
