USER'S GUIDE TO THE SHIP RESPONSE TACTICAL DECISION AID

The ship response program has been developed as a tactical decision aid to provide the ship driver with realtime information regarding the pitch, heave and roll motions of a ship advancing at constant speed and arbitrary heading in both wind wave and swell conditions. With the use of speed polar plots, the ship driver can also determine the course and speed to minimize these motions. The calculations in the program are based on data files of precomputed ship responses from the Navy Standard Ship Motion Program (SMP84). This report outlines the basic theory used in the development of this program, describes the procedure for running the program, and presents guidelines for interpreting the results.
