IMPROVING EFFICIENCY BY CONVERSION

In this article, reprinting a presentation at the First Asian Marine Technical Conference, the author outlines ways to improve fuel economy. He says that while a modern vessel, in comparison with one of ten years ago, might be designed to consume half the fuel for the same voyage and cargo, not every innovation is cost effective. A reduction of 30 to 40 per cent would be more realistic and can make conversion worthwhile with a two- or three-year pay back period envisaged. Emphasis is on elongation and motor and propeller modifications.
