WHAT IS IVHS?
The Intelligent Vehicle-Highway System (IVHS) concept is based on the use of advanced computer, electronics and communications technologies to increase the effectiveness of the entire surface transportation system. These technologies will be applied to all types of vehicles, to information devices, and to all parts of the transportation system in order to: improve safety; reduce congestion and improve accessibility; improve energy efficiency and environmental quality; and enhance economic productivity. The IVHS program will achieve its goals by implementing a number of diverse user services in the areas of travel planning, traveler information, travel management, travel payment, commercial vehicle operations, emergency management, and advanced vehicle control.
