GENEVA'S NEW MOBILITY PLAN
High motorization and employment rates, along with high population and city-center parking density and low public transportation ratio, even during peak hours -- combine in Geneva to generate the highest flows of automobile traffic recorded for any of the Swiss metropolitan areas. These principal characteristics of the Geneva situation dictate any major course of action for the medium and long-term improvement in Geneva's transportation problem. In accordance with government environmental laws, Geneva submitted in 1991 its Air Quality Improvement Plan, which underlies three coordinated studies: Mass Transit 2000, Traffic 2000, and Lake-End Crossing. Geneva's new mobility plan (GNMP) is the result of these three studies.
