SPACEPROBE ANALYSIS (RESIDENTIAL PARKING)

This article examines the problem of increasing car ownership in the UK, which is rapidly exceeding available parking spaces in residential areas. Extrapolation of present trends suggests that on-street parking of residents' cars will have doubled by 2025. The Department of Transport (DOT) commissioned a recent Transport Research Laboratory (TRL) project to estimate the nature, scale and distribution of future residential parking problems, and examine the likely effectiveness of various solutions. It analysed the somewhat limited statistics on parking, interviewed officers of representative county councils and district councils, and surveyed a sample of residents in five medium- sized English towns suffering typical parking problems. The survey asked residents various questions. These investigated residents' perceptions of local parking problems, how they might react if conditions became worse, and their views of possible remedies that might be applied by local authorities. Residents in areas with high parking densities were found to experience many problems. Many of them preferred to walk than drive for shorter journeys, but only a minority would use non-car modes for longer journeys. Most car owners viewed the availability of private parking space as important in choosing where to live, but only a minority would consider giving up their cars.
