DEVELOPMENT OF LENGTH AND SURFACE FOR LOCAL ROADS IN DENMARK, 1940 - 1988

UDVIKLINGEN I LAENGDE OG BELAEGNING FOR KOMMUNEVEJE 1940 -1988

Using the Statistical Yearbooks published by Denmarks Statistik as a source of information, an analysis has been made both of the increase of the total length of local roads in the period from 1940 to 1988, and the change in pavement condition. Based on the survey, a change can be seen particularly in the 1950 - 1970 period, when a big increase in asphalted local roads occured, and when many existing gravel roads were asphalted for the first time. The total length of local roads was approx. 45.000 km in 1940, in 1988 approx. 59.000 km. However, only some 10.000 km were asphalted in 1940. During the period from 1950 to 1970 the length of asphalted roads rose by 31.000 km. In 1988, almost the entire network of local roads is asphalted.
