ARCHITECTURAL ANALYSIS FOR THE WORLDWIDE PORT SYSTEM (WPS) REGIONAL INTEGRATED CARGO DATABASE (ICDB)

The objective of this tasking was to conduct research on state-of-the-art computer hardware, software, tools, and communications capabilities and to recommend an appropriate operational platform for the Integrated Cargo Database (ICDB), a system currently under development by Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) and the Military Traffic Management Command (MTMC). The Architectural Analysis considered all requirements including usage volumes, timing requirements, and available resources. This document has three parts: Part 1 presents a broad-based discussion of technical issues that must be addressed to successfully implement and maintain ICDB. Part 2 presents specific alternative configurations using informantion and metrics based on guidance from MTMC and ICDB documentation. Part 3 presents the ORNL recommendations which are based on the results of meshing Parts 1 and 2. ORNL recommends a central database server and regional processing sites (called Hubs). The Hubs receive and process data from multiple users and port sites. ORNL recommends a Hewlett Packard HP9000/877S upgraded to an HP9000/897S and configured as a database server for the central ICDB server and a HP9000/877S configured as a communications server for each of the regional Hubs. Other ORNL recommendations for specific components, including communications, are included in the report.
