PASSENGER TRANSPORT: PUTTING IT TO WORK. PAPERS PRESENTED AT THE CONFERENCE OF THE SAME NAME HELD IN APRIL 1992. CHAPTER 7. THE BUSES MEAN BUSINESS INITIATIVE: THE STORY SO FAR

This paper describes progress so far in the initiatives set out in the 1990 'Buses mean Business' document which aimed to highlight the role buses could play in easing congestion. Produced by a sub-group of the Bus and Coach Council, the document considered research and experience in the field, examined the rail alternatives and put forward some specific demonstration projects. These included bus priority schemes, guided bus systems, park and ride, clean fuel and engine efficiency, trolleybuses, feeder networks, passenger facilities and information technology. As a result of the document the Department of Transport set up a working party to consider a number of issues relating to buses. An initial U3 million funding has been allocated to demonstration projects which are listed in an appendix. For the covering abstract of the conference see IRRD 857377.
