SAFETY MAINTENANCE OF ROAD VEHICLES

The significant role of brake defects, particularly lack of proper brake adjustment, in crashes is documented and shown to be an important factor in determining the extent to which the overall braking performance of the vehicle population can be improved. The role of vehicle defects in crashes is found to be grossly underestimated. Brakes are by far the largest source of these defects. Means for realising better safety maintenance of vehicles are discussed, including a range of strategies and technology. Approaches to examining cost-effectiveness are considered, including the effects of emerging developments which have the potential to dramatically improve the cost-effectiveness of new safety inspection systems.
