SPECIFIC ASPECTS OF THE ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT OF THE ITALIAN HIGH-SPEED RAIL PROJECT

The impact of high-speed railway lines on Italy's urban and rural environment is considered. In the urban situation the rigid definition of the track is difficult to integrate into the urban fabric and poses a threat to historical Italian townscapes. There is a problem relating local planning forecasts to the needs of a national or international infrastructure and a requirement for a national environmental planning agency is identified. The lines on which Environmental Impact Studies are currently being carried out are listed: Rome-Naples, Florence- Bologna-Venice, Bologna-Milan, Milan- Turin, Genoa-Milan. These corridors vary considerably and a complex range of analyses and evaluations have resulted. This paper was presented at the EURAILSPEED 92 conference held in Brussels, April 27-29, 1992. For the covering abstract see IRRD 853180.
