FUNDAMENTALS OF TRAFFIC ACCIDENT RECONSTRUCTION

This a basic manual for use primarily by police officers assigned to traffic accident reconstruction. It will also be useful to the engineer undertaking the study of traffic accident reconstruction and can serve as a supplemental text in basic physics at the advanced high school or beginning college level. The manual abounds with clear illustrative diagrams and the photographs are in color to better show detail. Example problems based on real accident situations accompany each section. The manual is organized in two sections: (A) Introduction to Basic Physics, and (B) Selected Topics. The Selected Topics include the following chapters: (I) Time-Distance Relationships; (II) Basic Speed Equation, Kinetic Energy, and Combined Speed Equation; (III) Weight Shift; (IV) Quadratic Equation; (V) Radius and Tangent - Offset Equations; (VI) Critical Speed Yaw; (VII) Lane Change and Critical Turn-Away Equations; (VIII) Airborne Equations; (IX) Conservation of Linear Momentum; and (X) Motorcycle Speed Estimates. The following appendices accompany the text: (A) Truck Speed from Engine/Transmission Considerations; (B) Perspective Grid Mapping/Slide Method; (C) Damage Photograph Analysis/Interpretation; and (D) Major Traffic Accident Report Form.
