URBAN BUS TRANSIT IMPACT ON PAVEMENTS. FIRST YEAR ANNUAL REPORT

This report summarizes research performed during the first year of research and the research plan for the next two years. The research objective is to determine the impact of bus traffic upon urban pavement condition and life cycle costs. First year research focused first on a review of past research and determination of current conditions and data with regard to pavement conditions that were applicable to the research. A background report on (1) pertinent information that is available on buses and other traffic using Ann Arbor streets, (2) pavement management in Ann Arbor, and (3) pavement design, construction and management, in general, was compiled. The focus then turned to design of an experimental plan to objectively measure the effect of transit buses on Ann Arbor streets. The research plan establishes four separate research tracks, each of which will provide independent estimates of bus impact on pavement. Second year efforts will consist of collecting and organizing the data required by these four research tracks. The third year objectives are to complete the analysis of the data and produce a report that describes the impact of buses on city streets, with focus on pavement conditions and costs within the Ann Arbor transit bus service area.
