SEARCHING FOR FACTS ON NOISE

The author reviews the proceedings of a conference - Low Noise Vehicles - Fact or Friction - organised by the AVL List company in Austria. It was agreed that road surface noise is now a major problem in the reduction of noise level. Noise could have a harmful effect on the human body but research has revealed little to relate subjective reactions to measured characteristics. Different combinations of road surface and one type of tyre could produce noise level differences of up to 10 dB(A). Open texture asphalt was thought to be the best noise-suppressant surface but is costly to produce. Details are given of modifications to individual engine components by several manufacturers. Little was available to quieten vehicles already in use, mainly because manufacturers thought it uneconomic, and most engines were incapable of significant noise reduction without complete redesign. Finite element analysis was the accepted way to determine the vibrational behaviour of an engine block and crank case. New developments in acoustic-shielding were discussed and acoustic lens devices to deflect noise are mentioned. (Author/TRRL)
