USE OF POLYMER GRIDS IN UNPAVED ROAD - AN OVERVIEW

In considering the possibility of using polymer grids in the construction of unpaved roads in India the author examines the principles underlying their use. The properties of polymer grids are outlined. Factors which have been found to affect the mechanical properties of the polymers used include time, molecular weight, stress state and temperature. The mechanisms of failure in unpaved roads without grids are discussed including the progressive deterioration of base layer, subgrade and whole pavement structure. A concept is suggested for the structure of a safe unpaved road and the contribution which can be made by polymer grids described. Methods described by Giroud and Sowers for the design of reinforced unpaved road are considered. The author concludes that the technique can only be economical if the cost of the polymer grid is low although it can save time on a project. (TRRL) (Author/TRRL)
