ERGONOMICS AND ROAD SAFETY

The article describes how new research and development programs combining ergonomic and engineering approaches are attempting to improve safety on the roads, transport efficiency and environmental quality whilst at the same time preserving individual driver freedoms. In 1988 the European Communities adopted a research program, Dedicated Road Infrastructure for Vehicle safety in Europe (DRIVE). DRIVE envisages a complete general European road transport environment in which individual drivers are better informed and monitored; and in which intelligent vehicles communicate and cooperate with each other, the road users and the road infrastructure itself. DRIVE seeks to create favourable conditions for the development of this integrated road transport environment through collaborative R&D in the field of information technology and telecommunications applied to road transport. Certain projects within the DRIVE program aim at sustaining adequate vehicle control under conditions where the driver's cognitive, perceptual and motor abilities may become impaired.
