RAIL INTERMODAL MARKETING STRATEGIES: WHOLESALE VERSUS RETAIL. FINAL REPORT
The objectives of this study are: (1) To quantify the relative importance of retailing and wholesaling within the Canadian intermodal industry, and further, to estimate the extent of market penetration of intermodalism in Canada; (2) To survey trends in intermodalism in the United States, focusing on the reasons for the differences in intermodal strategy between Canada and the United States, and on recent examples of retail strategies by certain American railways; and (3) To assess the likelihood of changes in intermodal marketing strategies in Canada in the wake of regulatory reform and changing trade patterns. The report is based on three main sources of information: (1) Canadian National and Canadian Pacific waybill summaries provided by the railways to the National Transportation Agency, and Statistics Canada's For-Hire Trucking Origin-Destination survey; (2) An extensive literature search on intermodal transportation in general and on marketing strategies in particular; and (3) Telephone and/or personal interviews conducted with North American intermodal stakeholders (rail carriers, motor carriers, shippers, port representatives and third parties). The report is organized in four chapters. Chapter One is an introduction. Chapter two presents the results of the Canadian intermodal traffic analysis. Chapter Three compares and contrasts the intermodal strategies of the Canadian and American railways. The conclusions of the study are summarized in Chapter 4.
