AIRPORT PAVEMENT EVALUATION AND ACN-PCN CLASSIFICATION . THIRD INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON BEARING CAPACITY OF ROADS AND AIRFIELDS. PROCEEDINGS, NORWEGIAN INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY, TRONDHEIM, NORWAY, JULY 3-5 1990. VOLUMES 1-2

This paper describes The Laboratorio Nacional de Engenharia Civil's experience on airport pavement bearing capacity evaluation and ACN-PCN (aircraft classification number-pavement classification number) classification, using the structural analysis approach. Use is made of Falling Weight Deflectometer test results in combination with elastic layer computer programs such as BISAR or ELSYM 5. Studies were performed on different types of airport pavements: national airports in Portugal, as well as airports with very low traffic volumes like one airport in Africa and several local airports in Portugal. One of the main conclusions drawn from these studies is that the ACN-PCN system for bearing capacity classification has some drawbacks for airports designed for low traffic volumes, since values of PCN lower than the ACN of the aircraft using the pavements can be obtained, although the remaining life of such pavements is enough to sustain the forecast number of movements of those aircraft during the pavement's design life.
