The synergistic effect of calcium nitrite and sodium molybdate on corrosion of steel specimens in oxygenated lime water containing sodium chloride has been investigated. The combined inhibitor consisted of four and one half parts of calcium nitrite and one part of sodium molybdate. Visual inspection and electrochemical methods were used to evaluate the effectiveness of the inhibitor. The preliminary test results showed that the combination of calcium nitrite and sodium molybdate effectively protected the steel specimens against corrosion when the ratio of calcium nitrite and sodium molybdate to chloride ions was about 1:11. The combination of calcium nitrite and sodium molybdate appeared to be more effective in corrosion protection than calcium nitrite alone. (Author/TRRL)
