FREIGHT TRANSPORT AND ENVIRONMENT. INVENTORY OF EMISSION AND DISTURBANCE BY FREIGHT TRANSPORT

Freight transport is an important derivation of the economic society of today. However, this freight transport is also a source of exhaust emission and noise disturbance which cannot be overlooked. For some materials the emission produced by freight transport is even bigger than that produced by personal transport. This study calculates which part of the damage to the environment can be assigned to freight transport in order to design better and more environmentally friendly freight transport. Regarding the damage to the environment a differentiation is made between the different kinds of air polluting emissions and the different kinds of location and time dependant disturbances. Water and rail transport are considered as well as different types of highway transport modes. (Author/TRRL)
